The Ministry of Education is continuing its first-ever nationwide GWE awareness campaign, consisting of a series of workshops designed to induct Government Wage Earner (GWE) employees in government schools. This important initiative ensures staff are well-informed, supported, and empowered in their daily responsibilities.
Who are GWEs in our government schools?
GWEs are staff employed on an hourly wage who provide essential services to keep schools running smoothly. They include:
โข School drivers โ responsible for school vehicles
โข Cooks โ preparing meals in boarding schools
โข Watchmen / Security โ ensuring school safety
โข Matrons โ overseeing student welfare in hostels
โข Farm operators โ managing school farms
โข Clerks โ supporting administrative tasks
โข School bursars โ handling financial matters
These workshops were conducted by the Ministryโs Leave Section, Establishment Unit, and Learning & Development Unit, who guided GWE staff on employment processes, entitlements, and available support services.
These awareness workshops have been successfully conducted in government schools across Viti Levu, including:
โข Queen Victoria School
โข Ratu Kadavulevu School
โข Natabua High School and Primary School
โข Adi Cakobau School
โข Suva Grammar School
โข Delainamasi Government School
โข Sila Central School
โข Nasinu Secondary School
Through this initiative, GWE staff have gained valuable insights, strengthening their confidence and effectiveness in their roles.
The Ministry will continue to extend these workshops to government schools in the Northern and Eastern Divisions, including Kadavu, Taveuni, Levuka, and Labasa, ensuring that all GWE staff across Fiji benefit from this important program.
