The Ministry of Education has successfully concluded a pivotal workshop marking the commencement of the review of the Education Act 1966. This significant step aims to modernize Fiji’s education framework to meet contemporary needs.
“This review is essential to address the evolving landscape of education, including technological advancements and the diverse needs of our students,” stated the Hon. Minister for Education. “We are committed to addressing gaps in the current legislation, focusing on areas such as free education grants, curriculum reform, parental engagement, and emerging sector issues.”
Workshop participants engaged in comprehensive discussions, identifying key areas for improvement, including school governance, curriculum and assessment reforms, and health and safety. The Hon. Minister emphasized the need for a simplified, effective, and transparent education system.
The Ministry extends its sincere gratitude to the Chairwoman of the Review Team, Ms Rokobua Naiyaga as well as all participants and stakeholders, including Ministry personnel, faith-based organizations, school heads, and statutory bodies, for their invaluable contributions.
“We appreciate the commitment of the Education Act Review Team, supported by the Fiji Law Reform Commission and the Office of the Solicitor General, to facilitate this process with transparency,” the Hon. Radrodro added.
The next phase will include inter-ministerial consultations and an extensive public consultation across all four divisions, nine education districts, and selected clusters, engaging students, teachers, educators, stakeholders, and the general public. Details of this consultation will be announced shortly.
