The National Library Week Celebrations 2024 began today at Labasa College with an official opening by the Assistant Minister for Education, Hon. Iliesa Vanawalu.
Hon. Iliesa Vanawalu emphasized the week’s importance, “This week should be used to create more awareness on the importance of reading. Reading can help us explore and find a deeper sense of purpose in life.”
The theme for this year, “Ready, Set, Library,” showcases how libraries connect people, offer new skills, and provide diverse stories. The week also coincides with International Literacy Day, focusing on “Promoting multilingual education: Literacy for mutual understanding and peace.”
The Assistant Minister acknowledged the collaboration between the Ministry of Education and Library Services of Fiji (LSF) in making this event possible in a government school. He stressed the crucial role of school libraries in supporting education and enhancing classroom learning.
Since 1964, LSF has been essential in providing free library services that support literacy and culture. LSF operates five public libraries and 28 community information centers, especially in rural areas.
Hon. Vanawalu quoted Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam, “Books enable the children to view the past, use the experience for the present and dream for the future.” He also referenced Sidney Sheldon, “Libraries store the energy that fuels the imagination. They open up windows to the world and inspire us to explore and achieve.”
The Assistant Minister for Education encouraged parents and community members to support children in developing good reading habits and making use of public libraries. “Reading is a lifelong skill that is vital for our children’s success.”
National Library Week will continue with various activities and events throughout the week, celebrating the importance of libraries and reading.
