PRESS RELEASE – PROACTIVE MEASURES NEEDS TO BE TAKEN DUE TO ADVERSE WEATHER CONDITION

14 MARCH 2024

Due to the heavy rainfall and adverse weather conditions in the Western Division, the Permanent Secretary for Education is advising all heads of schools, teachers, parents and guardians to take proactive measures to ensure the safety and security of our children.

“We will keep a close watch on the situation and provide updates based on advice from National Disaster Management Office (NDMO). I am also reminding all parents and guardians to take heed of the weather updates and exercise all precautions in ensuring our children’s safety. You should be aware of the whereabouts of your children and they should not be seen near falling debris or play and cross flooded rivers and creeks ,” said Ms Selina Kuruleca.

“I also urge our Divisional and District officers to collaborate with our Heads of Schools to ensure we secure all schools, facilities and ensure the safety of our children. All Heads HOS are also reminded to only release children to their parents or guardians when it is safe to do so.”

The weather forecast predicts torrential rainfall in the upcoming days and the Ministry is working closely with the NDMO and other relevant authorities to ensure the current weather is monitored closely. The Ministry is also advising all parents and guardians to pay attention to the adverse weather conditions in their local area as safety of our children is paramount.
