YAT SEN SECONDARY SCHOOL PREFECTS INDUCTION CEREMONY 2024

The Permanent Secretary for Education presided over the Yat Sen Secondary Prefects Induction, officially welcoming new student leaders.

Ms. Kuruleca commenced the ceremony by acknowledging the foresight of the Chinese community in the early 1930s, whose vision led to the establishment of what was formerly known as the Fiji Chinese School, later renamed Yat Sen Secondary School in 1976.

Reflecting on the event’s theme, Efficiency, Ms. Kuruleca emphasized the importance of organization and communication in effective leadership.

Efficiency, she highlighted, is not only about being organized but also about effective communication, especially in a multiracial school like Yat Sen. As student leaders, it is imperative to be good communicators to ensure order and prevent chaos. Ms. Kuruleca underscored the significance of staying connected to one’s culture and values, citing the Chinese proverb, “You will not know the village you are going to if you do not know the village where you are coming from.”

Recognizing the school’s impressive academic success, with a 95% pass rate for Year 12 and a perfect 100% for Year 13, Ms. Kuruleca encouraged the new prefects to see their role as a sacred duty. She stressed the value of setting an example with sincerity and integrity, highlighting the trust that comes with being efficient and organized.

The Permanent Secretary expressed her gratitude to parents for their support and encouragement in their children’s education. She reiterated the government’s dedication to enhancing the education system to align with workforce needs.

Ms. Selina Kuruleca extended warm congratulations to the 2024 Yat Sen Secondary School prefects.
