The Minister for Education, Hon. Aseri Radrodro, officially launched the initiative βFrom Waste to Climate Action: Scaling Sustainable Composting in Fijian Schoolsβ at Nadi Sangam Primary School today.
Speaking at the launch, the Minister highlighted the importance of schools not just as centres of academic learning but also as leaders in environmental stewardship. He stated that the initiative aims to pilot and expand composting programs across up to ten schools, beginning with Nadi Sangam Primary School.
The Hon. Minister emphasized that composting is not only an environmental solution but also a practical learning tool, integrated into subjects such as science, agriculture, environmental studies, maths, geography, and arts. Students are encouraged to actively participate, bringing what they learn at school into their homes and communities.
He also acknowledged the dedication of teachers, school administrators, and students in championing recycling and sustainability initiatives, stressing the importance of working together with the Ministry to enhance the quality of education while fostering environmental responsibility.
The initiative is aligned with Fijiβs National Development Plan 2025β2029, the National Education Policy Framework 2024β2033, and the countryβs commitments under the Paris Agreement and the UN Sustainable Development Goals, strengthening climate-resilient education across the nation.
All partners involved were acknowledged including the Pacific Recycling Foundation, Recycle Organics, and the Canadian High Commission, for supporting climate action and sustainability education in Fijiβs schools.
