The Minister for Education, Honourable Aseri Radrodro, officiated the 140th Year Anniversary Cultural and Closing Night of the Fiji School of Medicine (FSM) on Saturday, 13 September 2025 at the FMF Gymnasium. The event, themed βHonouring the Past, Embracing the Future, and Celebrating Excellence in Health Professional Education,β marked the conclusion of a weeklong celebration.
Hon. Radrodro acknowledged FSM for its 140-year journey in training health professionals who have served Fiji and the Pacific. From its establishment in 1885, FSM has grown from a local medical training school to a leading institution within FNUβs College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences. Its alumni have played vital roles in public health campaigns, research, and healthcare delivery, including leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Hon. Minister highlighted the Governmentβs commitment to the future of health professional education, noting that a healthy nation is a productive nation. He spoke about ongoing efforts to strengthen school curricula and STEM pathways to better prepare students for tertiary education and the workforce, in line with Fijiβs 2021β2026 National Development Plan.
Hon. Radrodro also emphasized the importance of culture in education, praising FSM for blending tradition and scientific knowledge, which helps produce resilient and culturally competent health professionals.
The Minister concluded by acknowledging the dedication of FSM staff and alumni, encouraging continued excellence, innovation, and service to communities across Fiji and the Pacific. He wished all attendees and performers a joyous celebration and a memorable cultural night.
