STATEMENT BY HONOURABLE EDUCATION MINISTER ON RECENT CORPORAL PUNISHMENT INCIDENT AT QVS

The Minister for Education, Hon. Aseri Radrodro confirms that 9 senior students of Queen Victoria School allegedly inflicted corporal punishment to Year 9 and 10 students last week.

He further stated that all 9 students were counselled by Substance Abuse Advisory Council (SAAC) and relocated to their respective homes by the Head of School due to the seriousness of their misconduct which is against the MOE Child Protection Policy. This action was taken by the HOS for the safety of other Year 9 and 10 students while awaiting for a detailed report.

This incident has once again resurfaced the issue of ‘Kingpin’ despite the assurance by the School Administration that this will not happen.

He reiterated that any form of corporal punishment or violence in schools is strictly prohibited, ” Such actions not only violate the rights of students but also undermine the educational environment.”

The Education Minister also emphasises to all Teachers and school staff that they are expected to create a safe and supportive atmosphere for all students. They must uphold standards of professionalism and ensure that any disciplinary actions must adhere to MOE guidelines that prioritise the well-being of students.

Hon. Radrodro urges all schools to provide support for students who may have experienced bullying or violence, encouraging them to report such incidents without fear of retaliation.

The Minister highlighted the importance of parental involvement and community support in fostering a safe school environment,” Parents are encouraged to communicate openly with their children about their experiences at school.”

The Education Minister is determined to address these issues proactively, ensuring that all students feel safe and respected in their learning environments and a special audit will be taking place at QVS for all the school operations.
