NATIONAL CONSULTATION ON REPEALING OF AUTOMATIC PROGRESSION IN SCHOOLS
The Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4) stipulates that by 2030, all girls and boys shall complete free, equitable and quality primary and secondary education leading to relevant and effective learning outcomes. Quality education establishes a more reliable teaching-learning system whereby students, teachers and parents through collaboration and partnership are responsible in achieving better learning outcomes.
The Minister for Education, Honourable Aseri Radrodro, states that over the years Automatic Progression has created a culture of complacency amongst students, teachers and parents.
“At the moment, students may not feel the need to put in the required effort to achieve expected academic excellence, as their promotion to the next grade is guaranteed regardless of their academic performance,” said Hon. Radrodro.
“In order to repeal Automatic Progression in Schools, the Ministry of Education will be conducting a National Consultation in collaboration with the relevant education stakeholders which includes parents, guardians, teachers, student representatives, Heads of Schools, Teacher Unions, Tertiary Institutions, Parents Teachers Association, School Management Associations, Faith Based Organizations, Education partners and Statutory Bodies.”
“This National consultation will allow stakeholders from various backgrounds to share their insights and experiences and engaging different stakeholders ensures that voices are heard and considered, leading to more equitable policy outcomes. This platform will provide an opportunity for stakeholders to discuss and evaluate the potential impacts, both positive and negative, of the No Repeat Policy on different segments of society,” said Hon. Radrodro.
The National Consultation will be held on 16 January, 2025 at Suva Grammar High School Hall from 9am -12pm.
The objective of repealing automatic progression from the education system is to ensure that students achieve the learning outcomes and competencies of a particular level before advancing to the next academic level.
