THE MINISTER FOR EDUCATION OFFICIATES AT THE SIE TAWA (TALANOA, AGM, WELLNESS, AWARDS) CONFERENCE: CELEBRATING PROGRESS IN SPECIAL & INCLUSIVE EDUCATION IN FIJI
The Minister for Education, Hon. Aseri Radrodro, officiated at the SIE TAWA Conference this evening, a significant event that brought together educators, development partners, and key stakeholders in special and inclusive education (SIE). The event marked a moment of reflection, recognition, and celebration of the accomplishments made in the field of special and inclusive education in Fiji.
In his opening remarks, Hon. Aseri Radrodro said that special and inclusive education is an important responsibility. He highlighted the key role educators have in shaping the future and bringing hope to children with disabilities.
Hon. Radrodro acknowledged the progress made in the sector, including the enrolment of over 2,296 students with disabilities in special and regular schools. He also praised initiatives like helping students move to regular schools, testing the new Year 1-4 Learning and Needs curriculum, and increasing the budget for special and inclusive education.
“The progress we have seen is truly commendable, but we must also acknowledge that there is still more work to be done,” the Minister stated, emphasizing that the goal remains to ensure that every student, regardless of their abilities, has access to a quality education.
The Minister also took the time to recognize the dedication and resilience of special and inclusive educators, who, despite the challenges they face, have remained committed to their roles. “You have carried out your roles with passion, and with that passion, you continue to make a difference in the lives of your students,” he said.
The Minister also acknowledged the invaluable support from development partners, particularly the Government of Australia, as well as the Fiji Disabled Persons Federation and the National Council for Persons with Disabilities.
In closing, Hon. Radrodro encouraged all the teachers to continue their important work with empathy, compassion, and inclusivity. He reminded everyone to always dream big, believe in their abilities, and continue striving for positive change in education.
The Minister expressed his admiration for the educators being honored, stating that while awards are given as tokens of appreciation, the true impact of their work cannot be measured by trophies or certificates. “You are a class of your own, and I have every confidence that you deserve more than what can be presented here tonight.”
