Today, the Permanent Secretary for Education, Ms Selina Kuruleca acknowledged the creativity and efforts of Teachers, Students and Parents during the weeklong Literacy and Numeracy Festival initiative at Christian Mission Fellowship (CMF) School in Tacirua.

The Literacy and Numeracy Festival was a platform for the students and teachers at CMF Primary to research, prepare and present significant features of their allocated country whilst simultaneously learning how to read, analyze and comprehend the text that they read and doing some basic Maths.

While elaborating on the theme for the Literacy and Numeracy Festival, “Unlocking Limitless Potential Through Literacy Art”, Ms Kuruleca stated that Literacy art is a powerful tool that can unlock limitless potentials in individuals and communities.

PS Education emphasised that Literacy and Numeracy are essential skills which serve as building blocks of education, and they are essential for the development of individuals, communities, and the nation as a whole.

In Fiji, the Literacy and Numeracy Assessment (LANA) test are conducted at Year 5 and 7 .Each year approximately 38,500 students sit for the LANA tests. LANA data offers valuable insights into the educational progress of young Fijians, providing vital information to schools, parents, government, and non-government sectors.

LANA results are used as an assessment tool to measure the performance of students and this assists MOE and the teachers to develop strategies to help the students perform better in areas of concern.

Ms. Kuruleca stated that parents and guardians support is needed to ensure consistency across the board and also to help monitor their child’s progress through homework supervision, participation at the PTI and overall support for their children during their school life.

She further added that to address the challenges of LANA results students can be engaged in simple strategies such as being disciplined, starting the day through meaningful prayer, chores, preparing for school, attending school daily, staying in school and asking teachers for assistance when explanations are not clear. “ask for help, and help where you can, be honest, be compassionate and make good decisions, we are here to support you.”
