The Permanent Secretary for Education, Ms. Selina Kuruleca, delivered a memorable address at the closing ceremony of the Fiji Secondary School National U19 Cricket Tournament held at Albert Park.
“This event, this tournament marks the return of the sport at this level after 18 years, congratulations to Cricket Fiji, and to all of you our participating schools and athletes.”
The tournament serves as a significant platform for selecting Fijiβs U19 Menβs team for upcoming competitions, including the 2025 World Cup Qualifier in Japan. Ms. Kuruleca highlighted the tournamentβs role in reconnecting Fiji with its cricketing heritage and setting new standards for future events.
The Permanent Secretary Ms Kuruleca also praised the exceptional performances of the participating teams, with particular recognition given to Suva Grammar School for being the only Viti Levu school that remained to challenge the Power Houses of Cricket in Fiji. “Cricket has always belonged to our schools from Lau, to have a Suva School challenge for third place is remarkable, Vinaka vakalevu.”
The tournament’s successful organization and the level of sportsmanship displayed by the players were acknowledged, with a vision to make the event an annual fixture and expand opportunities for U19 women cricketers in the future. Ms Kuruleca expressed her gratitude to all those involved in making the tournament a success and contributing to the growth of cricket in Fiji, and challenged the organizers “to get more schools, including our primary schools invovled for the 2025 season. Her address ended with a reminder to the athletes ” use the remaining 1 week break to do some structured revision, get some rest and make good decisions whilst setting your eyes on the term 3 final exams.”
