The primary goal of the Assets & Infrastructure Services [AIS] is to ensure that every educational institution registered under Ministry of Education in Fiji provides a safe and conducive learning environment to its students. These institutes are: Early childhood education, Primary Schools, Secondary Schools and Vocational Centers. To attain such environments, the Ministry of Education has establish mechanisms which includes the following:

  • Assessment of school needs and advice schools on infrastructure priorities,
  • Conduct School Infrastructure project monitoring for quality assurance and compliance
  • Carry out Scope of Works and provide technical assistance to schools.
  • Preparation of Request for Quotation, Tender and Contract documents.
  • Compile and facilitate on the National Asset Management data on all Government schools and Non –Government schools.
  • Conduct Damage Assessments after disasters.
  • Review Policies which are associated with AIS.

AIS consists of three major units Establishment & Development, Capital Works and Education in Emergencies & Disaster Risk Reduction (EIE & DRR) which is responsible for:

  1. ESTABLISHMENT & DEVELOPMENT
  • Facilitates the requests for establishment and registration or recognition of schools from ECE Centers to secondary schools.
  • Facilitate the re-issue of school registration certificate.
  • Facilitate and distribute allocation for Non – Government Primary, Secondary, ECE Building/Boarding Grant, purchase of school boat, outboard motor engine and water tank.
  • Responsible for implementing all WASH upgrading projects under government and donor funds.
  • Facilitates the payment of lease premiums for new leases and renewal of leases in consultation with the lessees, TLTB and the Department of Lands.
  • Asses and monitor development projects funded by Government and Donor agencies (Education Clusters).
  1. CAPITAL & REHABILITATION WORKS
  • Prepares and manages the clearance of proposals for new major projects for Government Schools, Non-Governments Schools, Donor Projects and Government Institutions.
  • Coordinates with Ministry of Public Works Metrological Services & Transport (MPWMST) for design and documentation of approved projects.
  • Participates in the procurement and Tender processes.
  • Administer and monitor the implementation of major projects to the completion stage.
  • Administer Rehab works for affected schools
  1. EDUCATION IN EMERGENCIES & DISASTER RISK REDUCTION (EIE & DRR)
  • Responsible for Schools Climate Change Mitigation Strategies through Disaster Risk Reduction and Resilience programs with stakeholders.
  • Responsible for ensuring disaster preparedness in schools and managing risks emanating from emergencies and disasters.
  • Conduct Safer Schools against Disaster in Education training to management and school heads whilst encouraging disaster risk education in the school curriculum.
  • Coordinate the Ministry of Education’s Emergency Operation Centers during emergencies and disasters.
  • Coordinate with Education Cluster, NGO and CSO and donor agencies on disaster preparedness and response activities
