I extend my warmest wishes and heartfelt prayers for a blessed and prosperous Diwali to all the students, teachers, parents and stakeholders around the country.
The sacred festival of Diwali symbolizes love, light, and unity for all of us. It is not just a religious festival, but a celebration of cultural unity and social harmony, further strengthening the multicultural identity of our beloved Fiji.
Our Fiji is a country where people of different religions, cultures and traditions live together with mutual respect and brotherhood. Diwali further highlights this spirit of harmony, when Hindus, Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, and other communities come together to celebrate this festival of love, peace, and unity.
A deep and spiritual message of the festival of Diwali is that our mind and soul should also be purified. A true Diwali is one where we bring light to our character and behavior and we must make our lives like a bright lamp.
We must ensure that our enthusiasm for Diwali celebrations does not become a burden on nature and animals. The noise and pollution from firecrackers frightens animals and birds, and also pollutes the environment. So let us all celebrate a green (eco-friendly) Diwali this time with less pollution, less noise and more love.
It is also proven that on Diwali people buy new clothes, do decorations, buy gifts which is good, but we should not overdo it. Let us pray for others too, for the poor, the needy, the sick and the families who have lost their loved ones. Therefore, the true message of Diwali is fulfilled only when we understand the pain of others and come forward to help them.
Furthermore, on this auspicious occasion, I urge all parents to take special care of their children. It’s crucial to exercise caution around firecrackers, diyas, and crowded places. It is also our responsibility to teach children the lessons of sensitivity, simplicity and responsibility.
We must also remember that the message of Diwali, from darkness to light, from ignorance to knowledge, from hatred to love, is not just for one day. We must incorporate this philosophy into our lives every day. We must start with ourselves, and then we can improve others. If we celebrate a little bit of Diwali every day in our thoughts and actions, both our society and country will become more beautiful and stronger.
Let us all together make this Diwali a meaningful, peaceful, and inclusive festival and illuminate not only our homes but also our hearts.
Once again, I wish you all a happy and auspicious festival of lights. Best wishes for the New Year as well. Let us all come together to share love, spread light, and put humanity first.
