The Hon. Minister for Education, Aseri Radrodro, today made an unannounced visit to Dudley High School in Suva, Central Division. The visit aimed to personally inspect ongoing renovations and accountable utilization of funding allocated through the Education Grant.
Minister Radrodro commended Dudley High School’s management for their strong approach to the renovation project and overall operational efficiency. He highlighted the school’s digital platform as an excellent model for school oversight that the Ministry encourages other schools to adopt.
Addressing the staff, Minister Radrodro praised teachers for their deep understanding of students, acknowledging their vital role as parents given the varied and often challenging home environments students face. He emphasized the critical “duty of care of teachers at school” and lauded the Head of School’s commitment to challenging both students and teachers. The Minister also affirmed the Ministry of Education’s commitment to looking after its teachers.
The Minister discussed the significant challenges and evolution within Fiji’s education sector, noting that these gaps have prompted a comprehensive review of the 59-year-old Education Act 1966. He reiterated the government’s unwavering commitment to free education and free bus fares, detailing extensive assistance like the free education grant, free textbooks, and the $200 ‘Back to School’ support, all applied equitably across schools.
Despite these efforts, Minister Radrodro expressed concern over eligible students still not attending school, particularly in urban areas. He asserted, “When they are not coming to school, we are failing our duty of care to these students,” and emphasized that “it’s everyone’s responsibility” to ensure all Fijian students receive the education they deserve.
A ‘talanoa’ session followed, where Minister Radrodro engaged staff on issues including parental negligence, teacher licensing, inclusive education, and the shortage of Physics and Mathematics teachers. He reminded teachers of their crucial role, stating, “Students of Fiji need you.”
The Ministry of Education sincerely appreciates Dudley High School’s management and staff for their exemplary dedication to fostering a positive learning environment.
