EDUCATION MINISTER MEETS REPRESENTATIVES FROM GENEVA OFFICE FOR HUMAN RIGHTS EDUCATION
In light of promoting and incorporating human rights education in the school curriculum through classroom activities the Minister for Education, Hon. Aseri Radrodro met with representatives from Geneva Office for Human Rights Education (GO-HRE) today.
Hon. Radrodro conveyed his sincere appreciation to the GO-HRE team for briefing and updating on two instruction manuals titled “COLEGA” that provides lesson materials and related resources for human rights education in schools.
Colega, meaning friend or colleague, focuses on children and youth worldwide, teaching them about their rights as stated in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, as well as the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
The Education Minister stated that “Human rights education aligns with Fiji’s commitment to Sustainable Development Goal 4.7, which emphasises education for sustainable development, global citizenship, and appreciation of cultural diversity.”
During the meeting, deliberations focused on the Colega program which instills universal values such as empathy, inclusivity, tolerance, and solidarity as these values align with Fiji’s multicultural identity and its commitment to creating a harmonious society.
Headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, the Geneva Office for Human Rights Education (GO-HRE) provides Colega instruction at no cost for download (www.go-hre.org). The lessons are available in multiple languages, currently English, French, Spanish and Tagalog. The curriculum also includes worksheets, powerpoints and videos in English.
