OFFICIAL COMMISSIONING OF NEW SCHOOL INFRASTRUCTURE IN VANUA LEVU
Two schools in Vanua Levu, Ratu Luke Memorial Primary School and Wailevu West District School, celebrated the commissioning of new, resilient infrastructure following extensive damage from Tropical Cyclone Yasa in 2020.
The official handovers took place with Hon. Iliesa Vanawalu, Assistant Minister for Education, who highlighted the importance of these developments in strengthening the region’s educational facilities.
Both schools have benefited from funding through the Australian Government’s Cyclone Yasa Recovery Program, contributing a total of over FJD $4 million in rebuilding efforts. The projects include new classrooms, ablution blocks, staff quarters, and canteens, all built to Category 5 cyclone standards, ensuring the buildings are not only safe for learning but also serve as evacuation centers in times of disaster.
In addition to improving the learning environment, these projects emphasize sustainability, incorporating solar power and rainwater harvesting systems. The Australian Government’s support has also boosted local economies, with hundreds of jobs created and materials sourced within Fiji.
The newly opened facilities will benefit current and future generations of students, reinforcing the People’s Coalition Government’s commitment to providing safe, quality education for all Fijian children.
The Ministry of Education sincerely appreciates the Australian Government for their ongoing support and partnership in rebuilding our schools and ensuring that our children have access to safe, modern learning environments.
